My approach to teaching the violin is to focus on strong foundational skills – correct right and left hand positions and usage, a variety of bow techniques, basic music theory, and sight reading.
I guide students through efficient and effective practice strategies so that they learn how to work smarter. I like to break music down in a variety of ways into its fundamental parts and rebuild it, much like taking apart a puzzle and putting it back together, so we know how and why our strategies work.
I teach with the goal for my students to play for the rest of their lives if they choose, and to go on to meet new musical challenges in the styles and ensembles that inspire them most.
I admire that my students are talented in a variety of areas -- athletics, theatre, and debate for example.
My students typically go on to major in math, science, education, business, medicine, graphic design etc.
Dedicating oneself to an instrument teaches creative problem solving, discipline, and being able to approach a challenge from a variety of angles and perspectives.
Music develops confidence, and builds lasting friendships.
